Aaaaand... stop.
September 27th, 2005*phew* That's another MonsterLAN in the record books, and a fantastic ML it was too. We had around 130 people sign up from our 168 max, and it felt like at least 115 of those people showed up as well. Good times.
Self induced anguish
September 21st, 2005I'll be leaving just after 1pm today to get home and get a few thing sorted for my trip. Then it's straight to the bus station to catch a 1455 service to Adelaide, then a few hours wait until my 2030 service overnight to Melbourne. Then as soon as I get there I need to find a bus/train heading to Lara (just out of Geelong a ways), which I'm praying I won't have to run the 1 kilometre to the ticket stand and back just to get on. Hopefully Boxy will be ready to whisk me away from the stop when I arrive to get some much needed shuteye.
We'll be heading to the Arena around noon to start helping with the setup. Apparently there is a crew laying carpets with a few of the gamers lending a hand (very generous of them) in echange for a cheap lunch and reduced entry costs. Poor CP is gonna be out of pocket again ![]()
Then it's gonna be all go with tables, chairs, power, CAT cabling, backbone, branches, and for me some frantic server adjustments. I've ended up having to do the server stuff on the Friday again because some things you just can't do across two 512 net connections and it's gonna be the first time in ages I havn't been doing about 3 things at once (hopefully).
Tourney Time!
September 19th, 2005Getting closer to a bug free final pass on the servers. If I can invest some time tonight or tomorrow night then I shouldn't have too much to do on Friday.
CoD appears to be working, although I need to examine the admin side of it and confirm they are all running on unique ports.
UT2004 at least boots in now and I think it managed to use the old config actually after I entered in the extra DLLs. I didnt realise they'd been deleted when Chatto was working on the server and put a fresh install of UT on, so it had been causing me some headache. Found it last night and reinstalled them.
BF2 is what I've spent the least amount of time on, mostly because I'm running on faith that the battle configs and command listings I have will be sufficient to control the tournament.
Fingers crossed for a relatively pain free ML this weekend. ![]()
Gaseous Materials
September 6th, 2005The exitement never stops! Except for pain, it does brake for pain according to the bumper sticker.
Yesterday I roll up to work about 10minutes later than I usually do, only to find all the people from my building milling around the evacuation point. As I walk past the building towards them I notice that the doors are locked down in 'DANGER/HAZARD' with the red signs and all. "That can't be good."
In the IT department here we have an FM2000 extinguisher system mounted in the two 'server' rooms. There are four cannisters of gas which is rapidly ejected into the room in the event of a fire being detected.
Unfortunatly the system doesn't differentiate between an actually fire within the server room/nearby and just some fire alarm being tripped within the building. So as soon as anyone presses a button, then BOOM, $5000 a cylinder.
So since someone decided to knock out a wall in the server room to make one big room to hold all our servers, they wanted to isolate the gas system so it didn't get triggered by any dust that got kicked up. Obviously it didn't quite go as planned as the gas actually dropped while they were trying to isolate it.
Funny stuff. Meant I had to stand around till about 1100, not being able to do much.
The other occurance was that I swapped some SDRAM that I found in a box with a mate of mine so he could build a PC for his girlfriend. What did I get in return? A silver HL2 steam package. Awesome!
He never played with it so wasnt getting anything out of it anyway. He also had the steam preload files of HL2 as well, so I could avoid having to download 3Gb or so of stuff. So I updated HL2 overnight and started it up this morning to see if it would work, it does (yay!). Then queued up HL2DM and went off to work. The awesome thing about it being a silver package is that it means I now have real editions of basically every valve title/mod every made. And that includes the upcoming Day Of Defeat Source. HUZZAH!
I don't really care about CS of any flavour, but DoD might be nice. Havn't played it since about 2001.
Just do it.
September 4th, 2005This Saturday morning just gone, I awoke from a heavy session of BF2 the night before - meaning my eyes felt like someone elses, my trigger finger ached, dehydrated from the alcohol, and I was tired as a mofo - and had a bit of what at the time seemed to be a bright idea.
