But what about me!
What's happening in my life at the moment?
Well i'm working as a contracted Systems Analyst/Developer at a Smelter in Port Pirie, South Australia. The place is your stereotypical industrial site, it has excemptions from almost every environmental protection law in the country so it can keep operating. And it's like that because its the biggest facility of it's type (smelter) in the world. The smelter is basically the town. Cut out the smelter and you destroy the entire towns economy, since it's not really on the way to anywhere and doesn't have anything else to offer.
The facility itself is over 100 years old. Seriously. So there are things that date back right to it's foundation. It's kind of like a patchwork quilt, new things built on old things which were built on even older things. Scary and fascinating all at the same time.
The big kicker with the place apart from it's location is the hazards. Since it's a metals smelter (Lead, Zinc, Copper, Silver, Gold, etc) there are some very very serious health hazards around the place. Namely the fact that everything that gets made on site can kill you!
More later.
