How do people do it.
August 29th, 2006Seriously how do people do it?
I’ve just come from a 2hour meeting with the owner of the place, 2 of the other managers, the I.T. “Guru” who they were getting in to do all the work and me.
Basically the meeting was to discuss the building and roll out of the new server. We are currently on a windows NT server that is just about to crap its self. So the “guru” is looking at getting a new server to meet our needs and then some. Now I could clearly see that this guy is just there to fill his pockets with as much cash as he can, and this doesn’t really worry me, because it means that its going to be his ass on the line when it all goes wrong, and it will.
There were a couple of things that concerned me. One that he had not contacted out ISP to discuss swapping the mail over to an internal server and 2 that he said there is no way we can add wireless to the site.
There were a couple of other things in the meeting that didn’t quite jell like him saying that only he could so the setup of the server and the 20 or so workstations we have.
Then after the meeting why we were discussing something else, (the screwed over network layout) he then takes me aside and tells me, not to do too much work as the boss wont call him. WTF that’s the whole reason he’s paying me the extra $$$’s so he doesn’t have to call the guy.
Now I can’t wait to see the next meeting as the owner has told me that I am to do as much as I can without getting him involved.
Its got me fucked how some of you deal with all this kind of shit everyday.
Another one of those days.
August 23rd, 2006Ever had one of those days when the simple shit goes wrong.
Here I am in my nice new role at work as IT god. Now its one of those places that basicaly has never had anybody looking after it. After finding in the past week that, the tape drive backup wasnt working, the raid drives in the server, were unpluged, and basicaly that the network was a sham, I've slowly been fixing things. But the simple task of adding a printer just screwed me over.
Its a lovely duplex printing color laser jobbie, quite sexy in its own right, but it geve me a headache. Here I was all setup ready to go, and for some reason, it dosnt appear on the network. So I check the cable, check the setup, and cant find anything. So im thinking that there is some server side issue. Not having played with NT4 for sometime (its getting upgraded very soon)I fumble my way around but cant realy find anything stoping it. So after basicaly a day of screwing around, I decied to run a new cable from a nearby PC, and all of a sudden its on the network. Further investigation finds that the cable I was using has been prety eaten by rats, not all the way through but enough to make it not work. So now it looks like I'm gonig to end up with the task of re-doing some of the network cables.
I tell you what wireless is looking good.
Its all in black and white
August 17th, 2006Ever had one of those times when it all just seems that nothings going your way.
Well I've been having one of late.
1st the little laser that has served us for the past 7 years decided that it needed some money spent on it. And it looked like it was going to cost more than the car was worth. So the decision was made to replace the old girl. So it went off to the get find out what was wrong with it and we started looking for something to replace it. Now I must point out here that because the mechanic is a mate then there was no rush to get the car fixed, so we just made do with one car for a week. So after a lot of looking we finally found something that suited our needs. So we started the purchasing process. Only to find out that there isn’t that much wrong with the laser. So that comes as a bonus, get it roadworthy and sell it for more than we were going to get. (This is happening in the next week) So basically there we are with 3 cars, no big deal as one will be sold soon. So it’s working out how the hell we are going to pay for it, and then sorting out the finance. So it looked like we were going to have to make some changes for the next year or two until the new car is paid for. Then my boss calls me into the office to discuss my yearly review, and whamo a $135 a week pay rise, so there’s the new car paid for and then some. Then he tells me that finally I'm getting a van. So in the space of about 5 minutes I get a good 6g a year pay rise and a company car.
So as of tomorrow I have to wonder how the hell I'm going to fit 4 cars in my driveway, and the van is the size of 2 bloody cars, so it may as well be 5. But I guess it’s not all bad.
